West Bromwich Albion have confirmed the signing of Rickie Lambert from Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers looks to trim his squad.
Lambert becomes Tony Pulis’s third summer signing for a fee believed to be just under £3m. The 33-year-old striker passed a medical at West Brom on Friday and will join James Chester and James McClean as the new faces in the squad.
“Albion have completed the signing of Rickie Lambert from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee,” read a statement on West Brom’s website.
“The England international has penned a two-year deal and goes straight into the squad for the game at Bristol Rovers.
“Lambert underwent a medical this morning and will travel to the Memorial Stadium with a view to facing his former club. He has been handed the No.17 shirt for the 2015/16 Premier League campaign.”
Head coach Tony Pulis added: “Rickie is a good, strong, solid player who is a great character, good in the dressing room and good on the pitch. We are very pleased to have him on board. He’s a player of great pedigree and we look forward to integrating him into our squad.”
Liverpool signed their former academy player for £4.5m from Southampton last summer but his chances were limited in Rodgers’ team. Lambert made only 12 starts in all competitions for Liverpool, seven in the Premier League, and scored a total of three goals.
Lambert is anxious for the regular first-team football he enjoyed at Southampton which led to international recognition with England.
“I think the prospect of going into another season not playing was not going to happen,” he told West Brom’s website.
“There were a few inquiries, but West Brom just felt right from the very beginning. That was the overriding factor.”
Lambert got off to the perfect start for his new club, in the friendly against Rovers, scoring twice in a 4-0 win. Craig Gardner and Victor Anichebe were also on the scoresheet for Pulis’s men.
