Despite a crackdown on drink-fuelled debauchery coming into place overnight, holiday-makers have been caught on camera continuing to run wild in the Spanish town of Magaluf.
The new rules include a ban on drinking alcohol on the street between 10pm and 8am and restrictions on the town's notorious bar crawls. And those found naked — including bare-chested — or who spit or urinate in public also risk fines or even jail.
The measures are aimed at making it a family-friendly destination, with dozens of extra police taking to the streets in a bid to clean them up.
However, despite the new measures, resorts are still witnessing the same wild scenes that made Magaluf famous.
The Mirror went to Magaluf after the restrictions came into place, at midnight on June 9 local time, reporting “chaotic” scenes including: “A barely-dressed girl is collapsed in the street as two shirtless guys try to pull her up. Another teen laughs as a friend shoots booze into her mouth with a syringe.”
Meanwhile, defiant reveller Hannah MacDonald from Scotland told Sky News: “Fine me, do whatever you want, I’m going to get mortal on the street and I don’t care.”
Under the new rules, security staff and a company rep with first aid training must accompany any bar crawls, and they must give 7 days notice to be authorised. Only 20 people are allowed per pub crawl.
Juan Pedro Leon, 56, who owns the Office bar on the strip says the measures “could spell the end” for its tourist industry.
“What is the harm in letting people on to the street with drinks if they take them out in plastic cups? It’s still early in the season, but if the police do take a heavy-handed approach that is going to put people off coming here.
“That could lead to the loss of up to 1000 jobs for the local economy.”
