The Spaniard completed a £37.1 million (€53.4m) move from Chelsea in January 2014, becoming the marquee signing of David Moyes' short and ill-fated spell in charge at Old Trafford.
United then embarked upon a record £150m (€216m) spending spree that brought Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo to the club, with Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian following this summer.
"They told me, 'You are very important, you are one of the first,'" Mata told reporters. "I knew the club was going to have these kind of signings."
This squad overhaul has many United fans hoping that Louis van Gaal's men can mount a genuine challenge for the Premier League title next season but Mata insists attracting top talent is only the beginning.
"We know there is still a lot of work to do," he added.
"It's not just about bringing good players in. It's about playing well and winning trophies."
