Germany and Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus does not
think the Dortmund midfielder is good enough to thrive at a "top
European club"
Ilkay Gundogan should settle for Borussia Dortmund as he would not succeed at a bigger European club, according to Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus. The central midfielder returned from a serious back injury last season that had restricted him to just three appearances in 2013-14 for Dortmund.
Gundogan was widely expected to depart Signal Iduna Park this summer, having expressed his desire to experience a new challenge, although the Germany international is allegedly now put.
Matthaus thinks it would be wise for the 24-year-old to reconsider ditching Dortmund as he thinks Gundogan would not impress should he join a bigger club.
"I do not think that Gundogan would've made it into the first team at top European clubs like Barcelona, Bayern or Paris Saint-Germain," he told Sport Bild. "At Dortmund, the situation is different.
"The club have given him time to recover his fitness and, as a professional footballer, it's time to repay that faith and extend his contract until 2019.
"He now has a great opportunity to develop in a world-class BVB side and be involved in the national team again."
Gundogan featured 33 times for Dortmund in 2014-15, scoring three goals.
