Ilkay Gundogan says he was more than happy to stay at Signal Iduna Park because he believes Borussia Dortmund are "one of the biggest clubs in Europe".
The Germany international was all set to leave BVB this summer after rejecting the chance to extend his contract beyond 2016.
However, the midfielder performed a dramatic u-turn by spurning the advances of Manchester United and Barcelona and renewing his Dortmund deal for an additional year.
"BVB are one of the biggest clubs in Europe right now," the Germany international told reporters on Wednesday. "Or at least on the right path to becoming one."
Gundogan was speaking during a press conference on Dortmund's summer tour of Japan, Singapore and Malaysia, which has taken on added significance for the Bundesliga side's players as it represents a first chance to work with new coach Thomas Tuchel.
"Every training session right now is important for us," the 24-year-old added. "Especially the ones we are doing here in Asia."
Gundogan, who was plagued by a back injury for more than a year before returning last season, joined BVB from Nurnberg in 2011.
