Manchester United can win the Champions League after being drawn against Club Brugge in the play-off round, the Premier League club's secretary has claimed.
Louis van Gaal's side were paired with the Belgian outfit in Friday's draw,
meaning they avoided opponents such as Lazio, Monaco and CSKA Moscow,
as they seek to book their place in the group stage of the competition.
United
secretary John Alexander was in a positive mood after attending the
draw at Uefa's headquarters in Nyon, insisting that everyone at the club
believes they can win the Champions League, adding that midfielders
Adnan Januzaj and Marouane Fellaini could help to plot a route past
their countrymen.
"We're absolutely delighted to be back in the competition. We're back where we want to be," Alexander told Uefa.com.
"Belgian
football is right at the very top and we have two Belgian players
[Januzaj and Fellaini] in the squad who keep us abreast of what's going
on there. We go into any game with confidence.
"We'd like to think we can win the competition."
The
last of the Red Devils' three Champions League triumphs came in 2008
when they beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow, but they missed out on
the competition last season after finishing seventh in the 2013-14
Premier League.
United will host Club Brugge at Old Trafford in
the first leg of the play-off tie on Tuesday, August 18, with the return
fixture at the Jan Breydel Stadium taking place eight days later.
